ICC Teacher Hugh Chapman Passes National Teacher Board Certification

Hugh Chapman, the Vocational Business Teacher at Izard County High School, has recently been notified that he has passed all the requirements for National Board Teacher Certification. NBTC is recognition of high quality teaching practice as measured against rigorous standards by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. It is a symbol of achievement and commitment to excellence in teaching and is offered on a voluntary basis to teachers with at least three years of teaching experience.
Similar to certification in fields like medicine, National Board Certification is a rigorous, peer-reviewed process that ensures that Board-certified teachers have proven skills to advance student achievement. National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential. As part of this process, teachers must analyze their teaching context and students’ needs, submit videos of their teaching, and provide student work samples that demonstrate growth and achievement. Through this structured and iterative process, teachers expand and refine their content knowledge and pedagogy. The outcome is more powerful teaching that improves student achievement and reflects college and career readiness.
Hugh has been employed at Izard County High School for the past 21 years and has both a Master’s Degree in Education Theory and Practice and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Arkansas State University. Hugh is a resident of Horseshoe Bend and his wife, Julia, is a retired teacher from the Izard County Consolidated School District. Julia is currently a member of the ICC School Board and has been elected president of the board for the 2013-14 school year. Hugh and Julia’s two children also attended ICC. Currently, Dustin Chapman is a lawyer in Conway and Danielle Treat is an English Teacher at ICC.
