Izard County Elementary Chess Team wins the Northcentral Arkansas Education Tournament!!!

The Izard County Elementary Chess Team recently won the Northcentral Arkansas Education Co-op Chess Tournament at Melbourne. Izard County scored 13 points to edge out both Batesville and Sulphur Rock by one point. Individually, Cole Wallis placed first, Chase Orf second, Matthew Workman eighth, Noah Everett 18th, and Caleb Cruz 46th out of 62 participants for Izard County.  The Izard County K-3 Chess Team placed third overall. Individually, Landon McBride placed 10th, Allan Densford, 11th, Archer Booth 14th and Noah Stevenson 16th for Izard County. Earlier in the year, Izard County won both the junior and senior high divisions of the Co-op Chess Tournament. Steven Walker is the coach of the chess team.


Izard County High School Chess Team captured the Class1A-2A State Chess Championship!!!


The Izard County High School Chess Team captured the Class1A-2A State Chess Championship at Beebe on April 27. Izard County edged out defending state champion Bradford and Blevins to win its eighth chess state championship in school history but the first since 2008. Izard County was led by freshman Andrew Walker and senior Carey Behm. Walker and Behm both won all four of their matches. Senior Chandler Holt won two matches, lost one, and had a draw and junior Marcus McCormick and freshman Eric Vest both won one match and lost one match in the tournament. The team is coached by Steven Walker who collected his fifth chess state championship, four of those as a player at Izard County from 2005-08.


Izard County Junior Boys and Girls Track Team Winners!!!

The Izard County Junior Boys Track Team placed second in the Class 1A Region 3 Junior High Track Meet held at Batesville Southside on April 22. Izard County was led by Andrew Walker who won the 1600 meter run, the 800 meter run and anchored the winning 3200 meter relay team. Walker also ran the anchor leg of the second place 400 meter relay team and placed eighth in the long jump. Julio Martinez won the shot put, placed second in the 400 meter dash, fourth in the long jump, seventh in the 100 meter dash, and was also on the first place 1600 and 800 meter relay teams and the second place 100 meter relay team. Clay Mosley was a member of the first place 1600 and 800 meter relay teams, the second place 400 meter relay team, and also placed fifth in the 100 meter dash and seventh in both the high jump and the 200 meter dash. Ian Brewer was a member of the first place 1600 and 800 meter relay teams, the second place 400 meter relay team, and also placed fifth in the 110 meter hurdles and sixth in both the shot put and 200 meter dash. Eric Vest finished third in the discus and seventh in the shot put. Tyler Simino placed seventh in both the triple jump and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Cody Workman was seventh in the 1600 meter run and eighth in the 800 meter run. Southside Bee Branch won the boys team standings, followed by Izard County, Bradford, and Guy-Perkins. 

The Izard County Junior Girls Track Team placed fifth in the team standings. Izard County was led by Ashton Ford who finished second in both the long jump and the 100 meter hurdles, fourth in the 100 meter dash, the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, and the shot put, and sixth in the 400 meter dash. Natalie Everett placed second in the 200 meter dash, and fourth in both the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run. Kallie Fry placed third in the 1600 meter run. Bradford won the girls team standings and Shirley was second.


Izard County High School Quiz Bowl team takes fourth place in Class 1A State Tournament!

The Izard County High School Quiz Bowl team won the fourth place trophy in the Class 1A State Tournament in Hot Springs on April 6. The team defeated Norfork, Calico Rock, and Crowley’s Ridge Academy to reach the semifinals before losing to Alpena 210-190, in the semifinal round.  Team members are Davia Fuller, Chris Cole, Douglas Burke, Autumn Wiles, Perisa Jankovic, Davis Norton, Renee Hall, Mark Hatfield, and Seth Stapleton (Captain). Carol Burke is the coach of the team.


2013 Statewide Laws of Life Essay Contest!

Seven Izard County High School students won state awards in the 2013 Statewide Laws
of Life Essay Contest sponsored by the Arkansas Better Business Bureau. The theme of
the essays was what matters most in life. The Izard County students won seven of the
16 state awards presented in the awards ceremony held at Hendrix College in Conway
on April 9. KATV reporter Jason Pederson was the guest speaker for the event. Trenton
Hatman, Victor Padilla, Bay Wattanodom, and Mark Hatfield all were first place winners.
Lucas Smith placed second, and Carey Behm and Molly Taylor placed third. Hatman,
Padilla and Wattanodom also were awarded a cash prize of $500 each. Hatfield received
an award of $300, Taylor $200, Behm $200, and Smith $150. Sponsor Elizabeth Cowan
received $100 for the school having the most state winners. KATV reporter Jason
