The Izard County Cougars battled back from a 13 point deficit late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Cave City Cavemen, 72-68, in overtime, to capture the Izard County Invitational Tournament championship on Saturday, January 30th at Brockwell. The Cougars (23-7) trailed 38-25 entering the fourth period and erupted for 35 points in the fourth quarter and 12 in overtime before a capacity crowd of over 1,500 in the newly renovated Cougar Den. All five starters for the Cougars fouled out before the overtime period, but the reserves led by Jesse Ball, Cameron Massey, Cody Faulkner, Chris Mosley, and Uriah Mead secured the first Izard County Invitational Tournament Championship for ICC since 2008. Trenton Hatman led the Cougars with 26 points and Ball added 19 points. Jake Dockins contributed eight points and six rebounds, Massey five points, Preston Harmon four points, Kyle King three points and 12 rebounds, Chris King two points, Faulkner two points, Chris Mosley two points, and Uriah Mead one point and five rebounds. The Cougars defeated the Melbourne Bearkatz, 70-53, in the semifinal round. The Cougars were led by Hatman with 34 points and Kyle King with 10 points. Brice Taylor and Kyler McLaughlin led the Bearkatz with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Earlier in the week, the Cougars clinched a co-championship in the 1A 2 North conference and the No. 1 seed in the district tournament with a 62-41 win over the Pirates at home on January 24th. The Cougars (11-1 in the conference) were led by Massey with 20 points. The Cougars took a tough road loss on January 27th at Greers Ferry West Side, 72-63. The Cougars were led by Hatman with 31 points.
The Izard County Junior Cougars defeated the Cave City Junior Caveman, 42-38, to win the Izard County Invitational Tournament earlier in the evening. Coby Jones led the Junior Cougars (20-6) with 26 points and seven rebounds and Clay Mosley added six points and three rebounds. Andrew Walker contributed four points and seven rebounds, Julio Martinez four points, and Michael Gleghorn two points and five steals. The Junior Cougars routed the Melbourne Junior Bearkatz, 45-22, in the semifinal round on January 25th. Walker led the Junior Cougars with 15 points and Jones chipped in 10 points. Bryce Hutchins led the Junior Bearkatz with 12 points. On January 27th, the Junior Cougars defeated Greers Ferry West Side, 52-19, on the road in a nonconference matchup. Gleghorn led the Junior Cougars with 12 points. On January 24th, the Junior Cougars lost to the Calico Rock Junior Pirates, 31-30, in overtime in a conference matchup at home. Jones led the Junior Cougars with 17 points. The Junior Cougars fell to 5-1 in the conference but finished first in the conference race. The Izard County Lady Cougars defeated Greers Ferry West Side, 46-19. Kaydie Campbell and Ashton Simino led the Lady Cougars with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Calico Rock defeated the Cougars in the semifinals of the Izard County Invitational Tournament, 70-37. Simino and Makayla Gross led the Lady Cougars with 16 and 11 points, respectively. The Lady Cougars defeated Rural Special in a first round matchup, 64-55, in overtime, after rallying from a 20 point first half deficit. Simino led the Lady Cougars with 19 points and 17 rebounds and Campbell and Gross added 17 points and 15 points, respectively. The Lady Cougars also lost a conference matchup at home to the Lady Pirates, 68-44, on January 24th. Hannah Doty led the Lady Cougars with 14 points and eight rebounds. Simino added 10 points. The Junior Lady Cougars defeated Rural Special, 49-19, in a first round Izard County Invitational Tournament matchup. Ashton Ford led the Junior Lady Cougars with 12 points. The Junior Lady Cougars (18-5) lost a close semifinal matchup with the Melbourne Junior Lady Bearkatz, 39-36.
